Help: Searching Kafkas Werke

Kafkas Werke includes four Search pages:

From any of the Search pages, you can use the Upper Toolbar to open a context-sensitive Help page or to clear the Search form. You can also use the Right-Hand Toolbar to start a new search, to switch to a different Search page, to consult general information about Kafkas Werke, or to access the top-level Table of Contents page.

You can access the current Search page (i.e. usually the Search page most recently used) by clicking the Refine Search icon on the Upper Toolbar of any of the Kafkas Werke pages. Your original search terms will be preserved in the Search form. You can start a fresh search by clicking the New Search icon on the Right-Hand Toolbar. To switch to the Search page for a different section or sections of the database, click the relevant item (Prose, Diaries, Prose and Diaries or Diary Register) on the Right-Hand Toolbar.

Note that when you select Search from the Home Page menu, you will be taken to the Search Prose page.

Each Search page in Kafkas Werke contains a number of Search boxes, which you can use to search the database. For full descriptions of individual Search pages, select the relevant Help topic from the list at the top of this page.

To conduct a search, either type the required search terms (individual words or phrases) into the relevant search boxes or select them from a browse index. Search Options are selected from a drop-down list. In addition, a customise search results option enables you to specify the way in which results are retrieved.

In any Search page, you can combine search terms using Boolean and proximity searching, or you can search for variations on search terms using truncation.

Note: Between search boxes, all terms are treated by default as if they were combined using the Boolean operator AND.

When you have finished making your selections, click Search. A Summary of Matches (Volume) page (or Register Brief Summary in the case of a Register search) will appear displaying the results of your search.
